Guwahati: An incident at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Friday morning triggered concern among patients and visitors after an unidentified deceased person was reportedly left unattended on a public walkway within the hospital premises for a period of time.
According to eyewitnesses, the body, covered with a white cloth, was brought out from the hospital’s Medicine Department and placed along a pathway regularly used by patients, attendants and members of the public. The sight reportedly drew immediate attention, with several people expressing discomfort and questioning the decision to leave the body in an open area.
Those present at the scene reportedly objected to the manner in which the deceased was being handled, stating that the body should have been shifted directly to the hospital’s mortuary or another designated location instead of a busy pedestrian passage.
Following the objections raised by bystanders, the body was later removed from the walkway and shifted to another location within the hospital campus.
The incident has prompted fresh discussions over the standard operating procedures followed for the transportation and management of deceased patients at one of Assam’s largest government healthcare institutions. Visitors and attendants have called for stricter adherence to established protocols to ensure dignity for the deceased while preventing distress to patients and the public.
No official statement had been issued by the hospital authorities regarding the incident at the time of filing this report.
