Assam CM Asks Ministers to Keep Local MLAs Informed About Official Visits

Guwahati, October 31, 2026: To improve communication between the state administration and elected legislators, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has advised cabinet ministers to ensure that local MLAs receive advance information about official visits and government programmes taking place in their Assembly constituencies.

The advisory follows concerns that some ministerial field visits were conducted without notifying or involving the legislators representing the areas concerned.

In a communication issued to all ministers on Friday, October 30, Sarma drew attention to such instances and emphasised the importance of keeping elected representatives informed about government activities within their constituencies.

Ministers Advised to Involve MLAs in Public Programmes

Under the advisory, ministers have been asked to communicate their travel schedules to the MLAs concerned before undertaking official visits to their respective Assembly segments.

The Chief Minister also suggested inviting local legislators to public functions, government programmes and other official events attended by ministers in their constituencies.

The communication makes a distinction between public engagements and internal administrative meetings. While the participation of MLAs may not be necessary during departmental reviews or official meetings, ministers have been advised to inform them beforehand as a matter of courtesy.

Greater Coordination Between Government and Legislators

The Chief Minister stressed that better communication between ministers and constituency representatives would contribute to the smooth organisation of official engagements.

The advisory is intended to address gaps in coordination and encourage regular interaction between ministers and elected representatives at the constituency level.

By keeping MLAs informed about official programmes, the government aims to facilitate greater cooperation during administrative visits and public engagements.

The communication also underlines the importance of recognising the role of local legislators in government activities taking place within the constituencies they represent.

The advisory is expected to serve as a reference for ministers while planning future field visits and official programmes across Assam.
