Guwahati, June 13: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the GI-tagged litchis of Tezpur are gaining international recognition and carrying the sweetness of Assam to global markets through increasing exports.
Speaking at a flag-off event for an export consignment, Sarma said the litchis produced in Tezpur have immense demand outside India due to their unique quality and Geographical Indication (GI) status. He informed that around 1,000 kilograms of Tezpur litchis were recently exported to Dubai through the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
The Chief Minister also flagged off another consignment of 500 kilograms of litchis destined for Singapore, marking another step in expanding Assam’s horticultural exports to international markets.
Sarma said overseas buyers are seeking larger quantities of the fruit, but current production is insufficient to meet both international demand and strong domestic demand within Assam. He noted that the popularity of the GI-tagged Tezpur litchis has contributed to limited availability for export.
The Chief Minister expressed optimism about increasing exports in the future and said the state government would plan in advance to boost production and export of horticultural products from Assam.
He added that the growing international demand for Tezpur’s GI-tagged litchis reflects the potential of Assam’s agricultural sector and opens new opportunities for farmers and exporters in the state.
