Guwahati, September 13, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the inclusion of the Guwahati Declaration in the BRICS New Delhi Declaration, describing the recognition as an important development in the global fight against narcotics.
The New Delhi Declaration, adopted during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, specifically welcomed the Guwahati Declaration issued by the BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies. The document notes that the Guwahati Declaration will help facilitate operational and technical cooperation among BRICS anti-drug agencies.
Reacting to the development, Sarma said he was pleased to see Guwahati referenced in the BRICS declaration. He highlighted the significance of the recognition for Assam, which he described as being located along a critical narcotics corridor.
The Guwahati Declaration was adopted in July 2026 at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of the BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies held in Guwahati. The declaration called for stronger cooperation against illicit drug trafficking and related transnational organised crime, including faster information and intelligence sharing among enforcement agencies. It also emphasised the use of technology, digital tools and data-driven approaches in tackling the narcotics trade.
Sarma also linked the recognition of the Guwahati Declaration to India’s broader BRICS Chairship. He said the New Delhi Declaration addresses a wide range of global issues, including multilateral reforms, counter-terrorism, emerging technologies, agriculture and animal conservation.
The Assam Chief Minister praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the team involved in India’s BRICS leadership, describing the outcome as an important demonstration of India’s approach to international cooperation.
The New Delhi Declaration itself recognises India’s progress during its 2026 BRICS Chairship and emphasises a practical, inclusive and development-oriented approach to addressing common global challenges.
