77 Cattle Seized, 11 Apprehended in Darrang During Alleged Illegal Transportation

Mangaldai: A river-based police operation in Darrang district has led to the seizure of 77 cattle and the apprehension of 11 persons in connection with alleged illegal transportation, according to Darrang Police.

The operation was carried out by Mangaldai Police following specific information about the movement of cattle through the Brahmaputra river route. During river patrolling near Gadhowa Ferry Ghat, police intercepted two mechanised boats, one larger vessel and another smaller boat.

On inspection, the two boats were found carrying 65 and 12 cattle respectively, taking the total number of seized cattle to 77. Eleven persons were also found aboard the vessels.

Police reportedly asked those on board to produce documents establishing ownership of the cattle and authorising their transportation. However, they were unable to provide the required documents, following which the cattle and both boats were seized as per procedure.

The 11 persons were subsequently apprehended for verification and further legal action. Darrang Police said legal proceedings are being initiated in accordance with law, while further investigation into the case is underway.

The action forms part of Darrang Police’s continuing drive against the alleged illegal transportation of cattle in the district.
