Guwahati: A fatal hit-and-run accident claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Sunday after a speeding four-wheeler allegedly knocked him down on the service road connecting Basistha and Khanapara before fleeing the scene, police said.
According to preliminary information, the motorcycle was struck by the four-wheeler while travelling along the stretch, causing the rider to suffer severe injuries. The driver of the vehicle allegedly sped away immediately after the collision, leaving the victim lying on the road.
Residents of the area rushed to the accident site and informed the police and ambulance services. Despite their prompt response, the injured motorcyclist was declared dead before medical assistance could save him.
A police team later reached the spot, recovered the body and initiated an investigation into the incident. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and efforts are underway to identify the deceased, whose identity had not been established at the time of filing this report.
Investigators are also working to trace the vehicle involved in the accident and locate the absconding driver. Police are expected to examine CCTV footage from nearby locations and gather eyewitness accounts to reconstruct the sequence of events.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is in progress.
