Karimganj, Assam: Allegations of critical infrastructure failures at Karimganj Civil Hospital have triggered widespread concern after reports claimed that the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been operating without a functional air-conditioning system for several days. Local residents and patient attendants have also alleged that the hospital’s centralized oxygen supply system is not functioning properly, forcing healthcare workers to rely on oxygen cylinders for critical patients.
According to local reports and statements made during a visit to the hospital, the ICU’s air-conditioning unit has remained out of service for nearly two to three weeks. Hospital staff reportedly said the issue had been brought to the notice of higher authorities on multiple occasions and that although repairs were attempted, the system malfunctioned again.
Public concern has also grown over allegations that the centralized oxygen supply system is not operational. Residents and patient attendants claimed that emergency treatment is currently dependent on oxygen cylinders, raising fears about the hospital’s preparedness in handling critically ill patients.
Meanwhile, reports circulating locally have claimed that the hospital’s Superintendent, Dr. Subhrangshu Bhattacharya, has tendered his resignation. However, no official confirmation regarding the reported resignation or its reasons had been issued by the Health Department at the time of publication.
During the visit, a local public representative said the matter had been repeatedly brought to the attention of senior health officials. He urged the state government to ensure the immediate restoration of essential ICU facilities, warning that democratic protests would be launched if corrective measures were not initiated within the next ten days.
The representative further stated that any untoward incident resulting from the alleged infrastructure failures would raise serious questions about the accountability of the concerned authorities.
As of now, the district administration and the Assam Health Department have not issued a detailed official statement on the allegations regarding the ICU facilities or the reported resignation. Further clarification from the authorities is awaited.
