Assam, October 29, 2026: Railway operations along Assam’s crucial Lumding–Badarpur hill section resumed on Thursday afternoon after a locomotive derailment near Badarpur disrupted several passenger trains earlier in the day.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:50 AM when the front trolley of the locomotive hauling the Silchar–Guwahati Express (Train No. 15616) came off the tracks on the Badarpur railway bridge over the Barak River.
According to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the derailment took place at kilometre 166/7 between Badarpur and Sukritipur railway stations under the Lumding Division.
Fortunately, all passengers escaped unharmed, with railway authorities confirming that no injuries or casualties occurred.
Passenger Coaches Returned to Badarpur
Following the incident, railway personnel moved the rear portion of the train, including its passenger coaches, back to Badarpur station.
The affected Silchar–Guwahati Express was subsequently short-terminated at Badarpur, cancelling its remaining journey towards Guwahati.
The corresponding Guwahati–Silchar Express (Train No. 15615), scheduled to operate on Thursday, was also cancelled.
Meanwhile, several other long-distance trains, including the Sealdah–Silchar Express, Sairang–Kolkata Express, Agartala–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express and Agartala–Sealdah Express, faced temporary operational restrictions at different stations.
Railway Services Resume After Restoration Work
Railway engineering and maintenance teams carried out restoration operations under the supervision of senior officials to reopen the affected section.
Following the completion of the necessary work, the Sairang–Kolkata Express (Train No. 13126) became the first train to pass through the restored section.
The train departed Badarpur at 2:50 PM and successfully crossed the affected stretch at 3:04 PM, marking the resumption of rail movement.
NFR subsequently confirmed the restoration of train services through the Lumding–Badarpur hill section.
The incident had temporarily affected an important railway corridor connecting Assam’s Barak Valley with other parts of the Northeast.
The exact cause of the locomotive derailment has not yet been established.
Passengers travelling through the affected corridor are advised to verify their train schedules through official railway enquiry services, as earlier cancellations and delays may continue to affect individual journeys.
