Guwahati: In a major crackdown on the illegal tobacco trade, the West Guwahati Police District (WGPD) successfully intercepted a vehicle carrying a large consignment of illegal Burmese cigarettes near Azara Police Station and arrested two individuals involved in the smuggling operation.
According to Guwahati Police, the operation was carried out by a team from Azara Police Station on July 1. During the interception, police searched the vehicle bearing registration number AS32C0246 and recovered 11 cartons of illegal Burmese cigarettes.
The seized contraband has an estimated black-market value of more than ₹10 lakh, indicating a significant attempt to transport and distribute smuggled tobacco products in the region.
The two accused have been identified as Suresh Goswami and Pawan Gusai. Both were taken into custody following the seizure.
Police have initiated legal proceedings against the accused under the relevant provisions of law. Authorities are also investigating the source and intended destination of the illegal consignment to identify any larger smuggling network involved.
The operation is part of Guwahati Police’s continued efforts to curb the illegal trade of contraband goods and strengthen enforcement against organized smuggling activities across the city.
