Guwahati: Recognising the invaluable contribution of sanitation workers in maintaining public health and urban cleanliness, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) observed NAMASTE Day 2026 on Tuesday with a series of welfare-focused programmes at its Betkuchi office.
The event was organised to honour the dedication of sewer and septic tank workers, solid waste management personnel, waste pickers, drain cleaners, and workers engaged at Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs), acknowledging their vital role in keeping the city clean, safe and hygienic.
As part of the observance, participants joined a live webcast of the National NAMASTE Day programme, connecting the local celebration with the nationwide initiative aimed at promoting the dignity, safety and welfare of sanitation workers.
The programme also featured a health check-up camp for sanitation workers, enabling them to access basic medical screening and healthcare services. In addition, the civic body distributed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits to support safer working conditions for frontline sanitation personnel.
To promote educational opportunities for workers’ families, eligible beneficiaries were assisted with enrolment under the Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarship Schemes. GMC officials also facilitated access to other welfare initiatives designed to improve the social security, safety and overall well-being of sanitation workers.
The observance formed part of the broader objectives of the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) initiative, which focuses on ensuring the safety, dignity and empowerment of sanitation workers while encouraging improved occupational practices in urban local bodies.
Reaffirming its commitment to the city’s sanitation workforce, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation expressed appreciation for the tireless efforts of workers who continue to provide essential civic services. The civic body stated that it remains committed to strengthening welfare measures, promoting occupational safety and recognising the indispensable contribution of sanitation workers to a cleaner and healthier Guwahati.
The programme was held under the banner of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) as part of GMC’s ongoing efforts to improve urban sanitation while ensuring greater support and recognition for those engaged in essential sanitation services.
