New Delhi, June 22: The National Testing Agency (NTA) is preparing for a major overhaul of its examination system, with the government accepting recommendations made by a high-level committee to gradually move towards computer-based testing (CBT) for major entrance examinations, including NEET.
During a media interaction, a senior NTA official said that the government has already approved the committee’s recommendation to adopt computer-based examinations. The official stated that the agency is currently conducting detailed assessments and consultations with stakeholders before finalising the implementation plan.
According to the official, the transition to a computer-based format for NEET will require extensive planning, infrastructure readiness and coordination across examination centres nationwide. The NTA has already begun work on the process and is currently focused on completing the ongoing examination cycle, including the UGC-NET examination.
The official indicated that once the current cycle of examinations concludes, the agency will announce its plans for next year’s NEET examination. The proposed changes are aimed at enhancing transparency, security and efficiency in the conduct of large-scale national entrance tests.
The move follows recommendations made by a government-appointed high-level committee tasked with strengthening the integrity and reliability of competitive examinations. The shift to computer-based testing is expected to reduce logistical challenges and improve the overall examination process.
Responding to a question regarding examination results, the official said NTA teams are actively working on the matter and that results would be declared as soon as possible.
If implemented, the transition would mark one of the most significant reforms in the history of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG), which is taken annually by millions of aspiring medical students across India.
