Guwahati: The East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) has arrested five persons in connection with an alleged dog-lifting racket following an investigation conducted by the Basistha Police Station. The arrests were made after police traced the suspects using videographic evidence and carried out raids in Karbi Anglong district.
According to Guwahati Police, the investigation was launched after reports of dog thefts surfaced in the city. Police said the probe, supported by videographic evidence, helped identify the suspected individuals, leading to coordinated raids at multiple locations in Karbi Anglong.
The five arrested have been identified as Rangsina Ronghang (31) of Dokmoka, Bishu Rongpi (41) of Bokolia, Munu Rongpi (20) of Bokolia, Waisong Teron (32) of Bokolia and Mercy Tokbipi (42) of Bokolia.
During the operation, police seized two vehicles allegedly used in the commission of the offence—a Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS (registration number AS09K3453) and a Grand Vitara (registration number AS01GK4619). Five mobile phones were also recovered and seized as part of the investigation.
In a post on X, Guwahati Police said the arrests marked a significant breakthrough in the case, adding that the suspects were traced through meticulous investigation and technical evidence before the raids were carried out.
Police have registered the case and further investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the alleged racket, establish whether the accused were involved in other similar incidents, and identify any additional persons linked to the case.
