Guwahati: Senior Congress leader and former Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, has firmly denied rumours of switching political parties or joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Addressing the media at his residence, Saikia said he remains fully committed to the ideology of the Indian National Congress and will continue to work for the party with dedication.
Reacting to speculation surrounding his political future following the recent election results, Saikia stated that the Congress party has accepted the verdict of the people with humility and will carefully analyse the reasons behind the outcome.
“We accept the election results with humility and will definitely analyse the reasons behind them. Whatever responsibility the party high command assigns to me, I am prepared to carry it out as a loyal worker of the Congress,” Saikia said during the interaction with journalists.
Rejecting reports about a possible shift to the BJP, the veteran Congress leader said his association with the Congress ideology dates back to 1972 and that his loyalty to the party would never change.
“I want to make it clear to those spreading rumours about me joining the BJP that I have been associated with the ideals of the Congress since 1972. My loyalty towards the Congress is lifelong and it will never change,” he asserted.
Saikia also launched a sharp attack on the ruling BJP government, alleging corruption in various sectors, particularly in water supply schemes. He further criticised what he described as the BJP’s “washing machine politics,” a term often used by opposition leaders to accuse the ruling party of inducting leaders facing allegations after they switch sides.
“The voice of the opposition against the ruling party will always remain strong. Our struggle against corruption and against the BJP’s so-called washing machine politics will continue,” he said.
The Congress leader added that the party would continue to discharge its responsibilities as a strong opposition force in the interest of the people of Assam.
Debabrata Saikia currently serves as a senior MLA from Nazira constituency and remains one of the prominent faces of the Assam Congress.
