Karimganj, Assam: Allegations of financial irregularities in the implementation of government development schemes have surfaced at Sherpur Gram Panchayat under the Nilambazar Development Block in Assam’s Karimganj district.
According to a written complaint filed by Sheikh Ahmed, two separate projects were allegedly sanctioned under the 15th Finance Commission during the 2024–25 financial year for the same Ward No. 8 Sherpur Part-II Anganwadi Centre. The complaint has been submitted to the Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Parishad, the District Commissioner, and other concerned authorities, seeking an impartial investigation into the matter.
The complaint alleges that one project worth ₹2.70 lakh was sanctioned through the Nilambazar Anchalik Panchayat, while another project valued at ₹1,86,318 was approved through Sherpur Gram Panchayat for the same Anganwadi Centre. It further claims that a substantial portion of the funds has already been withdrawn, although only the project executed through the Anchalik Panchayat was found to be under construction during a site visit.
A person identified as the chairman of the construction committee stated that no separate work had been carried out under the Gram Panchayat project. The complainant further alleged that geo-tagged photographs were uploaded online to facilitate the release of funds despite no corresponding work having been executed at the site.
The complaint also points to alleged discrepancies between official project records and the actual condition on the ground. Copies of the complaint have been forwarded to the concerned minister, the local MLA, and other government authorities for appropriate action.
No official response has yet been issued by the concerned department or authorities regarding the allegations. Local residents have called for a transparent investigation and strict action if any irregularities are established.
