Assam Youth Critical After Alleged Mob Assault in Cachar Border Area

Silchar, June 10: Days after a controversial assault incident in Patharkandi sparked public concern, another alleged mob violence case has surfaced from Assam’s Cachar district, raising fresh questions over vigilante attacks in border areas.

According to reports, a young man identified as Imran Hussain, a resident of Saidpur under the Katigorah area of Cachar district, was allegedly brutally assaulted by a group of miscreants who reportedly suspected him of being a Bangladeshi infiltrator.

Sources said the incident took place on Monday night when Imran was returning home from Tapadar Bazaar. He was allegedly intercepted on the way and subjected to a severe beating by a group of unidentified individuals. The assault reportedly left him critically injured.

Local sources claimed that personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) rushed to the spot after hearing distress calls. On seeing the security personnel, the alleged attackers reportedly fled the area. The injured youth was first taken to a local hospital at Kalain and was later shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) as his condition deteriorated.

Hospital sources indicated that Imran remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, Ahmed Sahil, General Secretary of the Karimganj District Congress Committee, visited the hospital and met the victim and his family members. He condemned the attack and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible. Sahil also expressed concern over reports that the injured youth had initially faced difficulties in receiving adequate medical treatment before being readmitted for specialised care.

The incident has triggered anxiety in several villages along the Assam-Bangladesh border region. Residents have urged the police administration to conduct a thorough investigation and take stringent action against the perpetrators.

As of filing this report, Cachar Police had not issued an official statement regarding arrests or the motive behind the attack. An investigation is expected to determine the circumstances that led to the assault and identify those involved.

The latest incident has once again brought the issue of mob violence and mistaken identity attacks into focus, prompting calls for stronger law enforcement measures to prevent such occurrences in sensitive border areas.
