Guwahati: To minimise disruption to academic activities in flood-hit areas, the Assam Government has decided to provide free replacement textbooks to students whose study materials were damaged in the recent floods across the state.
The announcement was made by Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, who said the Assam State Textbook Production and Publication Corporation (ASTPPC) has been directed to begin preparations for the immediate resupply of textbooks to affected students.
Sharing the update on social media platform X, the minister said the decision was taken after reviewing the extent of flood damage in several districts. He added that ensuring uninterrupted education for students remains a priority despite the challenges posed by the floods.
To expedite the distribution process, all Inspectors of Schools (IS) and District Elementary Education Officers (DEEOs) have been instructed to assess the requirement for replacement textbooks and submit their district-wise demands at the earliest.
Dr. Pegu further announced that special arrangements are being made for the flood-affected districts of Charaideo and Sivasagar, where replacement textbooks will be supplied for the entire districts in view of the widespread damage caused by the floods.
According to the minister, the fresh stock of textbooks will be dispatched immediately after schools reopen, enabling students to resume their studies without unnecessary delays.
The initiative is part of the state government’s efforts to ensure that the recent floods do not adversely affect the education of children in the affected regions. By replacing damaged textbooks and study materials, the government aims to help students return to classrooms with minimal disruption and continue their academic year without interruption.
