Nalbari (Assam): Assam on Saturday launched a 10-day statewide narcotics destruction drive during which drugs worth ₹472.51 crore, seized by the Assam Police in various operations, will be destroyed as part of the state’s continued crackdown on drug trafficking. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the campaign at the 14th Assam Police Battalion (APBN) campus in Daulashal, Nalbari.
The Chief Minister also inaugurated a secure drug destruction facility, established with support from the Central Government, to facilitate the scientific and safe disposal of seized narcotic substances after the completion of legal procedures.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the destruction drive will cover a wide range of narcotics confiscated by the Assam Police, including heroin, ganja, cough syrup, opium, morphine, and cocaine. Similar destruction exercises are being carried out simultaneously across all districts of the state over the next 10 days.
Announcing the initiative, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said narcotics worth more than ₹472.51 crore would be destroyed during the statewide exercise, reaffirming the government’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs and its commitment to eliminating the menace from Assam.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of close coordination between the Central and State governments in combating organised drug trafficking. He said the joint approach would strengthen intelligence sharing, help track the movement of illicit substances, identify habitual offenders, intercept traffickers at state borders before they enter Assam, and build stronger cases for successful prosecution.
“We will be ruthless in this fight against drugs—that’s a promise and a warning,” the Chief Minister said, reiterating the government’s resolve to intensify action against drug trafficking networks operating within and across state borders.
Officials said the destruction drive forms part of Assam’s broader anti-narcotics strategy, which focuses on sustained enforcement, border surveillance, intelligence-led operations, and coordinated action with central agencies to curb the illegal drug trade.
Over the past few years, Assam Police has carried out numerous anti-drug operations, leading to large-scale seizures of narcotic substances and the arrest of several individuals allegedly involved in trafficking. The latest destruction drive is aimed at ensuring that seized contraband is disposed of securely and does not re-enter illegal circulation.
The state government said the initiative reflects its continued efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks, strengthen law enforcement, and build a drug-free Assam through coordinated action and stricter enforcement measures.
