Guwahati: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Friday lauded a unique initiative by two young bird enthusiasts from the state, Chirantan Saikia and Abhilash Saikia, who have launched a dedicated website documenting the rich avian diversity of Assam.
The website, named Pokkhi, showcases photographs and information on nearly 350 bird species found across Assam. Each species is listed with its English and Assamese names, making the platform a valuable resource for birdwatchers, students, researchers, and nature lovers. According to the creators, the collection will continue to expand with the addition of more bird species over time.
Sharing the development on X, Ranoj Pegu said he met the two nature enthusiasts at Janata Bhawan and congratulated them on their remarkable initiative. He described the platform as a significant contribution towards bird conservation, public awareness, and nature education in the state.
The Minister noted that Assam is a paradise for diverse birdlife and said initiatives such as Pokkhi play an important role in documenting the state’s rich biodiversity while encouraging greater appreciation and conservation of its natural heritage.
The website is expected to serve as a digital repository for Assam’s avifauna and help promote interest in birdwatching and environmental conservation among the younger generation. By providing easy access to photographs and local names of bird species, the platform also aims to strengthen awareness about the state’s ecological wealth.
The Pokkhi website can be accessed at pokkhi.in, where users can explore the growing collection of bird species from across Assam.
