Barpeta: In a major breakthrough against rising cybercrime cases in Assam, Barpeta Police reportedly arrested an alleged cyber fraudster identified as Zahidul Islam from Guwahati.
According to sources, the accused is a resident of Howly in Barpeta district and had allegedly been involved in cyber fraud activities for a long period. Police suspect that he used fraudulent methods to siphon money from the credit cards of several people across different parts of Barpeta district.
The arrest has drawn public attention as cybercrime incidents continue to rise rapidly across Assam, particularly cases involving online banking fraud, OTP scams, and unauthorized credit card transactions. Local residents and public representatives appreciated the efforts of Barpeta Police for taking action against such criminal activities.
During a public interaction, speakers highlighted the growing threat of cybercrime in the state and urged the Assam Government to strengthen measures to curb such offences. Citizens were also advised not to share OTPs, banking details, or confidential financial information with unknown persons under any circumstances.
“Even a single mistake can empty your bank balance or credit card account,” a speaker warned while appealing to the public to remain alert against online fraudsters.
Police sources stated that the investigation is currently underway, and further details regarding the alleged cybercrime network or involvement of additional individuals may emerge during the course of the probe.
Authorities have not yet released complete official details regarding the case as interrogation and investigation continue.
