Nagaon: The district administration has initiated a major eviction operation at the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary in Nagaon district to reclaim protected forest land allegedly occupied through illegal encroachments. The drive is aimed at restoring hundreds of bighas of land that fall within the sanctuary’s protected area.
According to local sources, the operation is focused on clearing large stretches of jute cultivation that were reportedly being carried out inside the wildlife sanctuary. Authorities have launched the exercise as part of efforts to remove unauthorized occupation and protect the ecologically sensitive forest area.
During the operation, some residents alleged that certain forest officials had previously allowed cultivation on government land in return for money. They claimed that farming activities had continued for years without any action until the present eviction drive began. However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and the police have not made any official comment on the matter.
A strong security presence has been deployed across the sanctuary, with police and other security personnel stationed at key locations to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order throughout the operation.
