Guwahati: Commuters travelling between Guwahati and North Guwahati are set to get major relief as the old Saraighat Bridge is scheduled to resume vehicular movement today following nearly two months of repair and maintenance work.
The bridge is expected to be opened to traffic at around 12:30 pm, with the General Manager of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) likely to formally inaugurate the reopening.
The old Saraighat Bridge had been shut to vehicles since July 13 to allow repair-related work to be carried out. The prolonged closure disrupted daily traffic movement and resulted in congestion on the newer Saraighat Bridge as well as several alternative roads connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati.
The reopening is expected to significantly improve connectivity across the Brahmaputra and reduce the pressure on routes that have been carrying additional traffic during the closure. Regular commuters, particularly those travelling between the two sides of the river for work and other daily activities, are likely to benefit from the restoration of the bridge.
The closure had caused considerable inconvenience for residents and motorists, with traffic bottlenecks becoming a frequent issue during peak hours.
With the repair work now completed, vehicular traffic on the old Saraighat Bridge is expected to resume from this afternoon, restoring an important road link between Guwahati and North Guwahati.
