India Marks Major Space Milestone With Launch of EOS-05; Sarbananda Sonowal Congratulates ISRO

New Delhi: India has achieved another significant milestone in space exploration with the successful launch of the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket, with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal congratulating the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) team for the achievement.

The satellite was launched on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 2:55 AM IST. According to ISRO, EOS-05 is India’s first-ever imaging satellite placed from a geosynchronous orbit, marking an important advancement in the country’s Earth observation capabilities.

Reacting to the development, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal hailed the mission as a new frontier for India’s space programme. In a post on X, he congratulated the entire ISRO team and described the achievement as a reflection of India’s growing capabilities in space exploration.

Sonowal also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India’s expanding achievements in the space sector. He said the country was moving beyond ambitious goals to accomplish major technological milestones.

The GSLV-F17 mission represents the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). ISRO states that the mission successfully placed EOS-05 into its intended orbit.

EOS-05 is classified as an Earth observation spacecraft. Its deployment from geosynchronous orbit adds a new capability to India’s satellite imaging programme and is expected to strengthen the country’s ability to obtain Earth observation data for various applications.

The successful mission further underscores ISRO’s continuing efforts to expand India’s indigenous space capabilities and develop advanced satellite and launch-vehicle technologies.
