Guwahati, July 21: Continuing its statewide campaign against narcotics trafficking, Assam Police has seized 24 kilograms of suspected opium in Kamrup district, with the estimated value of the contraband pegged at approximately ₹1.6 crore in the illegal market.
The operation led to the apprehension of one individual, while authorities have launched a detailed investigation to identify others who may be connected to the alleged drug trafficking network.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the seizure through a post on social media, commending the efforts of the Kamrup Police and Assam Police for their continued action against drug-related crimes.
According to the Chief Minister, the latest operation forms part of the state’s ongoing crackdown on narcotics and organised drug networks operating in Assam. He praised the police personnel involved in the operation and reiterated the government’s commitment to intensifying its anti-drug campaign.
Police officials have not yet disclosed the identity of the arrested person or the exact location of the seizure. Investigators are expected to examine the source of the suspected opium, its intended destination, and whether the accused has links to a larger interstate or cross-border trafficking network.
The seizure adds to a series of anti-narcotics operations carried out by Assam Police in recent years as part of the state’s “Assam Against Drugs” initiative, aimed at dismantling drug supply chains and curbing the illegal trade in narcotics.
Officials said further investigation is underway, and additional arrests may follow if evidence reveals the involvement of other individuals in the network.
