Atlanta: Argentina came from behind to defeat England 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, securing a place in the final and remaining on course to defend their world title.
England took the lead in the second half through Anthony Gordon and looked set to reach their first FIFA World Cup final since 1966. However, Argentina responded in the closing stages with two quick goals to overturn the deficit.
Captain Lionel Messi, making his 205th appearance for Argentina and facing England for the first time in his international career, played a decisive role by providing assists for both goals. Enzo Fernández equalised before substitute Lautaro Martínez struck the winner just minutes later to complete Argentina’s comeback.
With the victory, Lionel Scaloni’s side advanced to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, where they will face Spain on 19 July in a bid to become back-to-back world champions.
England will now meet France in the third-place play-off (Bronze Final) on 18 July after missing out on a place in the title clash.
