Guwahati (Assam): The Assam Government has completed the distribution of 1.34 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of free rice to nearly 70 lakh families across the state during July, reinforcing its food security programme for economically vulnerable households. The update was shared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through a post on X.
Highlighting the scale of the initiative, the Chief Minister said the free rice distribution reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that essential food grains reach eligible beneficiaries across Assam. He described the programme as part of the principle of “Anna Sewa Se Jan Sewa”, aimed at providing sustained support to families through welfare-driven food assistance.
The Chief Minister also announced that subsidised masoor dal and sugar will be made available again from August 2026, adding to the benefits already being extended under the state’s public distribution system. The move is expected to provide additional relief to beneficiaries by reducing the cost of essential household commodities.
According to the government, the distribution of over 1.34 lakh MT of rice during July covered nearly 70 lakh families across the state, making it one of Assam’s largest food assistance initiatives. The programme is designed to ensure uninterrupted access to staple food while easing the financial burden on eligible households.
The reintroduction of subsidised masoor dal and sugar is expected to complement the existing free rice scheme by expanding access to essential food items. Officials believe the combined measures will strengthen nutritional support and improve affordability for families dependent on government welfare programmes.
