Guwahati: Assam is set to further strengthen its dairy infrastructure after the State Cabinet approved the lease of 33 bighas of land in Biswanath for setting up a bulk milk cooler and chilling centre by Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd., popularly known through its AMUL brand.
The proposed project is expected to improve milk procurement, storage and transportation facilities, enabling dairy farmers to preserve milk quality and secure better market access. The initiative is also aimed at increasing value addition in the dairy sector while creating employment opportunities.
Announcing the Cabinet decision on X, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said the facility will play an important role in strengthening Assam’s dairy ecosystem by expanding collection infrastructure and improving the state’s milk supply chain.
Once operational, the Biswanath centre is expected to become Assam’s second major dairy processing facility after the milk processing plant at Rani near Guwahati. The project is expected to support the growing dairy industry by enhancing cold-chain infrastructure and reducing post-collection losses.
The initiative is part of the Assam Government’s ongoing efforts to promote the state’s ‘White Revolution’ under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Through investments in modern dairy infrastructure, the government aims to increase milk production, improve farmers’ livelihoods and build a more sustainable dairy economy across Assam.
