Guwahati: Assam has strengthened its position as one of the leading states in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G), with over 22 lakh rural families benefiting from the flagship housing scheme aimed at providing permanent homes to economically weaker households.
Highlighting the state’s performance in a post on X on Friday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam’s progress in delivering affordable housing has set new milestones over the past decade. He attributed the achievement to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the effective execution of the Centrally sponsored scheme across the state.
According to the Chief Minister, Assam has received Rs 27,730 crore under PMAY-G over the last ten years, enabling large-scale construction of pucca houses for eligible rural beneficiaries. He also stated that the state currently ranks second in the country in the release of funds under the scheme, reflecting its strong implementation record.
Sarma said the programme has significantly improved the living conditions of lakhs of rural families by ensuring access to safe and durable homes with basic amenities. He added that the government’s focus remains on extending the benefits of the scheme to every eligible household.
The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin is one of the Centre’s flagship rural development programmes, designed to provide permanent housing to homeless and economically disadvantaged families in villages. Besides improving housing infrastructure, the scheme aims to enhance the quality of life and promote inclusive development in rural areas.
Reaffirming the state’s commitment to the initiative, the Chief Minister said the Assam government will continue working to ensure that no deserving family is left out of the programme as it advances towards the goal of “Housing for All.”
