Bokakhat: Four residents of Lohore Chapori village under the Dergaon Forest Range in the Bokakhat Legislative Assembly Constituency were seriously injured after a suspected Royal Bengal tiger attacked them on Tuesday morning, triggering panic among villagers.
According to local reports, the incident occurred when Memi Pao was tying her cattle in a field near her house. A tiger suddenly emerged and attacked her.
Hearing her screams for help, three villagers—Ashwini Pegu, Devaranjan Kaman, and Pepei Pegu—rushed to rescue her. However, the tiger also attacked them, leaving all four with serious injuries.
After the tiger retreated, local residents rescued the injured victims and transported them to Alami village, from where a 108 emergency ambulance shifted them to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition was reported to be critical.
The attack has spread fear among the residents of Lohore Chapori, with many expressing concern over the increasing movement of wild animals into human settlements.
Following the incident, officials from the Numaligarh Forest Range, led by the Range Officer, arrived at the village along with a team of forest personnel to assess the situation and monitor the movement of the tiger.
The area, located close to Kaziranga National Park, has witnessed repeated incidents of human-wildlife conflict. Wild animals, including rhinos, elephants, and tigers, frequently stray into the Brahmaputra riverine islands (chaporis), posing a significant threat to the lives and livelihoods of local residents.
Villagers have urged the Forest Department to take immediate measures to capture the tiger and prevent further attacks, while also seeking enhanced protection for communities living in the vulnerable riverine areas near the national park.
