Karimganj, June 28: Mariam Bibi (103), the wife of late freedom fighter Gazi Sikandar Ali, passed away at her residence in Bhanga in Assam’s Karimganj district, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, courage and an unwavering commitment to justice. Her funeral prayers (Janaza) were offered on Sunday in the presence of hundreds of mourners who gathered to pay their last respects.
The funeral was held at her residence in Bhanga, where family members, local residents and well-wishers assembled to bid her a final farewell. Ameer-e-Shariat Maulana Yusuf Ali led the special funeral prayers and offered prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul while expressing condolences to the bereaved family.
Mariam Bibi is survived by a son, grandchildren and other family members. Besides being remembered as the wife of a freedom fighter, she was widely regarded in the region as a symbol of courage, perseverance and unwavering determination in the face of personal tragedy.
Family members recalled that Mariam Bibi endured several heartbreaking incidents during her lifetime, including the kidnapping of her grandson, Naz Ahmed, and the broad daylight killing of her son, Tufail Ahmed. Despite these tragedies, they said she remained steadfast in pursuing legal and social efforts seeking justice, alongside her son Gazi Fuzal Ahmed, and never wavered in her resolve against injustice.
Her passing has been widely mourned across Karimganj, with residents remembering her for her resilience, dignity and unwavering pursuit of justice despite immense personal loss. Many described her as an inspiring figure whose courage and determination left a lasting impression on the community.
With the demise of Mariam Bibi, Karimganj has lost a respected elder whose life remained closely associated with the legacy of India’s freedom movement through her late husband and whose personal struggle for justice earned her admiration across the region. Her death marks the end of a remarkable chapter remembered for courage, sacrifice and perseverance.
