Hailakandi, Assam, June 17: In a major drive against child labour, the district administration in Hailakandi rescued around 10 children who were allegedly engaged in work at various commercial establishments across the town. The operation was carried out by a joint team comprising the Labour Department, District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), and the District-Level Task Force following complaints regarding child labour in the area.
According to officials, the rescued children were initially brought to the District Child Protection Office and later shifted to the Udichi Children Home in Hailakandi. Authorities are currently conducting verification of their identities, ages, and working conditions. Medical examinations of the children have also been completed, and their cases have been placed before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for further proceedings.
District Child Protection officials stated that June is being observed as Anti-Child Labour Month, and special inspection drives are being conducted across the district to identify and rescue children engaged in labour. The latest operation was carried out in Hailakandi town, while similar inspections are planned in other areas, including Katlicherra, Panchgram, and Algapur Bazaar.
Officials emphasized that child labour is a serious social offence that deprives children of their right to education and a normal childhood. They urged employers and the public not to engage children in any form of labour and instead ensure that they attend school and complete their education.
The administration has warned that strict legal action will be taken against establishments and individuals found violating provisions of the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act. Authorities reiterated their commitment to continuing anti-child labour campaigns across the district with the aim of eliminating the practice and safeguarding children’s rights.
The awareness campaign and inspection drives are expected to continue throughout the month as part of the district’s efforts to ensure that every child has access to education and a safe childhood.
