West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced a major policy decision aimed at protecting young people and preserving social values across the state. Under the new directive, no liquor shop licences will be granted within a one-kilometre radius of schools, colleges and temples.
The announcement was made during a public address, where the Chief Minister stressed that the rule of law would guide the administration’s decisions. Speaking in Bengali, Adhikari stated that liquor outlets would not be allowed near educational institutions and religious places.
“We have already said that liquor shop licences cannot be issued within one kilometre of schools, colleges and temples,” he said during the speech.
The move is being seen as a significant step toward safeguarding students and maintaining a healthier social environment around educational and religious institutions. The government believes the policy will help protect the future of the youth and strengthen social discipline and cultural values.
Adhikari also assured the public that the new government would function differently and responsibly, adding that there was “no reason to worry.”
The decision comes weeks after Suvendu Adhikari assumed office as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections.
