Karimganj, June 28: A 45-year-old man was killed in a tragic road accident near Bhanga Bazar under the Badarpur Police Station area in Assam’s Karimganj district on Sunday morning after he was allegedly hit by a speeding dumper truck on National Highway 37.
The deceased has been identified as Belal Ahmed, a resident of Gudia village. According to local sources, Belal had left his home at around 6:30 am to buy groceries from the local market when the accident occurred.
Witnesses said that a 10-wheeler dumper truck bearing registration number NLA 4094, travelling from the Karimganj side, allegedly struck Belal from behind while he was on the roadside. The impact threw him to the ground, and he sustained fatal injuries. He was declared dead at the scene.
The incident triggered anger among local residents, who stopped the dumper after the accident and alerted the police. A team from Badarpur Police Station reached the spot, brought the situation under control and shifted the body to Karimganj Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Family members said Belal Ahmed was the sole breadwinner of the family. He is survived by his wife and five children, including two daughters and three sons. According to relatives, he worked as a mason and struggled to support his family through daily wage labour.
The victim’s relatives have appealed to the government and district administration to provide adequate compensation and financial assistance to the bereaved family. They said the sudden loss has left the family in severe financial distress.
Local residents have also demanded strict action against the driver responsible for the accident and called for stronger enforcement of traffic regulations on the busy highway to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Police have initiated legal formalities and an investigation into the accident is underway. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash and are expected to take appropriate action based on the findings.
