Baghmara: Healthcare infrastructure in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills is set for a major boost as development works worth more than ₹11 crore at Baghmara Civil Hospital continue to progress. Reviewing the projects on Wednesday, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma directed officials to ensure that all works are completed on priority while maintaining high construction and service standards.
The review was conducted in the presence of Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Dr. Sampath Kumar, the Deputy Commissioner and senior health department officials. During the inspection, the Chief Minister assessed the progress of several ongoing projects aimed at transforming the hospital into a modern and dependable healthcare centre for the people of South Garo Hills.
Among the major infrastructure projects nearing completion is a refurbished Outpatient Department (OPD) block, while construction of an overhead water tank and renovation of staff quarters are also progressing steadily.
To further strengthen healthcare services in the district, the hospital is being equipped with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a 50-bed Mother and Child Health (MCH) Wing, and a blood bank. These facilities are expected to improve maternal, neonatal and emergency healthcare services for residents of the region.
As part of the government’s wider healthcare expansion programme, the Chokpot Community Health Centre (CHC) is also being upgraded into a First Referral Unit (FRU), enabling patients from remote areas to access specialised medical care closer to home.
During the review, Sangma instructed officials to expedite all ongoing works without compromising quality. He reiterated that improving healthcare infrastructure remains one of the state government’s key priorities and reaffirmed its commitment to making quality healthcare more accessible across the Garo Hills.
Once completed, the upgraded facilities are expected to significantly strengthen healthcare delivery in South Garo Hills by expanding access to critical medical services and reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised treatment.
