Assam’s Historic Agomoni Higher Secondary School Set for ₹8 Crore Infrastructure Development

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu highlights the development of the 78-year-old institution in Dhubri district, which currently serves more than 1,800 students.

Guwahati, November 1, 2026: One of western Assam’s oldest educational institutions, Agomoni Higher Secondary School in Dhubri district, is receiving a major infrastructure boost with a development initiative valued at ₹8 crore, marking another significant chapter in the school’s nearly eight-decade-long history.

Assam Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu highlighted the infrastructure development of the institution, which has been serving students from Agomoni and surrounding areas since 1948.

The school, situated under the Agomoni education block, currently accommodates 1,851 students from Classes VI to XII, making it an important centre of secondary and higher secondary education in the region.

₹8 Crore Development Initiative for Agomoni Higher Secondary School

The infrastructure development project, with a stated total cost of ₹8 crore, represents a substantial investment in the historic institution.

The initiative is intended to support the school’s educational environment and strengthen the infrastructure available to its growing student community.

The development assumes particular significance given the institution’s long-standing contribution to education in Dhubri district.

While the overall project cost has been announced, detailed information about individual construction components, the implementation schedule and the expected completion date has not been specified.

A School With a History Dating Back to 1948

Established in 1948, Agomoni Higher Secondary School has played an important role in extending educational opportunities to successive generations of students in the region.

Zainal Abedin Sarkar served as the institution’s founding principal, helping establish the foundation for its academic development.

A major milestone came in 1977 when the school was provincialised, bringing it under the state government’s educational system.

The following year, in 1978, the institution was upgraded to the higher secondary level, expanding educational opportunities for students pursuing studies beyond the secondary stage.

Over the decades, the school has developed into a prominent educational institution in Dhubri district while retaining its historical importance.

More Than 1,850 Students Enrolled Across Classes VI to XII

Spread across approximately 15 bighas of land, Agomoni Higher Secondary School currently has an enrolment of 1,851 students.

The institution offers education from Class VI through Class XII, catering to students at the upper primary, secondary and higher secondary levels.

Under the leadership of Principal Pranay Kumar Chakraborty, the school has a teaching workforce of 31 teachers, supported by six non-teaching staff members.

The teaching and administrative teams play an essential role in maintaining the institution’s academic activities and supporting students throughout their educational journey.

With a substantial student population, improvements to the school’s physical infrastructure are particularly important for sustaining its educational services.

Ranoj Pegu Highlights Importance of Educational Development

Dr Ranoj Pegu acknowledged Agomoni Higher Secondary School’s historical significance and its continuing role in the educational development of the region.

The Education Minister expressed hope that the institution would achieve further academic progress, maintain high educational standards and contribute to the development of skilled human resources.

His emphasis on the school’s growth reflects the importance of strengthening established government educational institutions alongside efforts to improve the quality of learning.

The infrastructure initiative also draws attention to the role of educational investment in supporting students from rural and semi-urban communities.

Infrastructure Investment to Support Future Generations

For an institution established before India’s first Republic Day, the latest development initiative represents an important opportunity to strengthen facilities for future generations of learners.

Agomoni Higher Secondary School has witnessed several phases of educational development, from its establishment in 1948 to its provincialisation in 1977 and subsequent expansion to higher secondary education.

The ₹8 crore infrastructure initiative adds another chapter to that history.

As the school continues to serve more than 1,800 students, the proposed improvements are expected to support its educational activities and strengthen its capacity to meet future requirements.

The institution’s continuing development highlights the importance of preserving the legacy of established schools while investing in modern educational infrastructure across Assam.
