Sivasagar, Assam: A fresh controversy has emerged in Assam’s Sivasagar district after the organisation Jatiya Sangrami Sena, Assam voiced strong opposition to the purchase of land by four individuals originally from Barpeta district near Kuwamora Satra in Merbil Rajah Gaon.
Addressing the media at the site, representatives of the organisation alleged that four persons from Barpeta had acquired land in the area and claimed that there were irregularities in the documents used during the transaction. The organisation further alleged that Aadhaar-related records had been fraudulently obtained, though no official confirmation of such allegations has been made by authorities.
During the protest, Jatiya Sangrami Sena described Sivasagar as a historic centre of Assamese heritage and expressed concerns that the land purchase could have long-term demographic implications for the region. The organisation alleged that the acquisition was part of a larger plan to establish settlements in Upper Assam, a claim for which no evidence was presented publicly during the event.
The group’s leaders stated that they had installed signboards at the location and issued a one-week ultimatum, demanding that the land transaction be reversed. They warned that if action was not taken within the stipulated period, the organisation would launch democratic protests against the district administration.
Speaking at the gathering, a leader of Jatiya Sangrami Sena said the organisation would not allow what it described as attempts to establish a “Miya village” in the historic district. He claimed that four families settling today could eventually lead to a larger settlement in the future, a development the organisation said it opposes.
The organisation also appealed to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Dimow MLA Sushanta Borgohain, the Sivasagar District Commissioner, and other district officials to investigate the matter and take appropriate action if any irregularities are found.
Jatiya Sangrami Sena further stated that Hindus and Muslims have coexisted peacefully in Sivasagar for generations and urged authorities to preserve communal harmony while examining the land purchase allegations.
At the time of reporting, no official statement had been issued by the Sivasagar district administration regarding the allegations made by the organisation. Independent verification of the claims is awaited.
Authorities are expected to examine the matter in accordance with applicable laws and land records before any conclusions are reached.
