Sivasagar Organisations Demand Probe Into Land Purchase, Issue One-Week Ultimatum

Sivasagar, Assam: A controversy has erupted in Assam’s historic district of Sivasagar after two organisations alleged irregularities in the purchase of land by four individuals originally from Barpeta district and demanded administrative intervention.

Members of Jatiya Sangrami Sena Assam and the Sivasagar District Committee of the Sadou Asom Boriya Jatiya Parishad visited Merbil Rajgaon near Kuwamora Satra, around six kilometres from Sivasagar town, and expressed opposition to the reported land purchase. According to the organisations, four individuals, identified as Fulbor Ali, Ekibul Ali, and two others from Baghbar in Barpeta district, had purchased approximately one bigha and eight lechas of land in the area.

During the visit, representatives of the organisations installed signboards on the disputed land and announced a seven-day deadline for the district administration to examine the matter. They alleged that documents related to the land purchase and identity records should be thoroughly verified.

Leaders of the organisations claimed that the development could alter the demographic character of the locality and demanded that the district administration investigate how the land transaction was completed. They also called for scrutiny of any officials or intermediaries involved in the process.

Speaking to the media, a leader of Jatiya Sangrami Sena Assam described the issue as a matter of concern for local residents and urged the Assam Government and district authorities to conduct a high-level inquiry. The organisation further demanded action if any irregularities are found during verification.

The groups alleged that some of the individuals had earlier been residing near railway land in the Namtiyal area before purchasing land at Merbil Rajgaon. They also questioned discrepancies between information mentioned in identity documents and other official records, calling for a detailed investigation by the authorities.

No official statement from the Sivasagar district administration regarding the allegations had been reported at the time of filing this report.

The incident has drawn attention in the district, with the organisations insisting on administrative action within a week while authorities are expected to verify the claims and determine whether any legal violations have occurred.
