New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the bail pleas of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma today in connection with singer Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025. The hearing comes amid renewed demands for justice from the singer’s admirers.
Mahanta, who remains lodged in Baksa jail, approached the apex court after the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail application. During earlier proceedings, the Assam government informed the Supreme Court about the progress of the trial and examination of witnesses.
Ahead of the hearing, protesters gathered at Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur, urging the government to strongly oppose bail for the accused. Participants warned of wider demonstrations across Assam if they are released.
Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and a delegation of artistes and associates had also approached the Assam Governor, seeking stronger prosecution, opposition to pending bail pleas and an expeditious trial.
