GMC Warns of ₹25,000 Spot Fine for Blocking Drains in Guwahati

Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has issued a strict warning against dumping construction debris, garbage and other materials into the city’s drainage channels, announcing a spot fine of ₹25,000 for obstructing the natural flow of water. The civic body has urged residents, contractors and commercial establishments to follow proper waste disposal practices to prevent waterlogging and protect public infrastructure.

The municipal corporation highlighted that dumping waste into drains can obstruct rainwater flow, increase the risk of artificial flooding and create serious public health concerns. The warning comes as part of GMC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen sanitation management and improve drainage conditions across Guwahati.

Under the civic body’s existing penalty structure, individuals or establishments found blocking drains by dumping construction materials or other waste will face a ₹25,000 spot fine. GMC has also urged construction agencies and property owners to ensure that debris generated during building activities is disposed of responsibly without affecting public drainage systems.

To strengthen enforcement, the corporation has deployed Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to monitor civic violations and address public complaints. Residents can report illegal dumping, blocked drains and other sanitation-related offences through the GMC helpline number 8811007000, allowing authorities to take appropriate action.

Appealing for public cooperation, GMC stressed that keeping drains free from waste is essential to preventing waterlogging, maintaining hygiene and protecting the city’s roads and neighbourhoods. The corporation has called for collective responsibility in building a cleaner, safer and more resilient Guwahati.
