Virat Kohli Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI Chase Record, Powers India to Victory Over New Zealand

Auckland: Virat Kohli added another historic achievement to his illustrious cricket career on Wednesday, November 4, as he surpassed legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in ODI run chases. The former Indian captain produced a commanding innings of 74 runs from 51 balls, helping India register a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the rain-affected opening ODI at Eden Park.

With his latest performance, Kohli increased his tally to 8,741 runs in ODI chases, overtaking Tendulkar’s previous record of 8,720 runs. Kohli achieved the milestone in 169 innings, compared with Tendulkar’s 242 innings. His remarkable record in run chases includes 30 centuries and 46 half-centuries, highlighting his consistency in limited-overs cricket.

India faced an early setback when Rohit Sharma was dismissed without scoring. However, Kohli joined captain Shubman Gill to rebuild the innings, with the pair adding 113 runs for the second wicket. While Kohli dominated the New Zealand bowlers with 13 boundaries and a six, Gill contributed a patient 37 off 56 deliveries.

Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu praised Gill’s maturity and approach, noting that the young captain allowed Kohli to control the innings without being influenced by his aggressive batting. Former spinner Murali Kartik also highlighted the understanding and positive chemistry between the two players.

Earlier, India’s pace attack restricted New Zealand to 185 runs in 40.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh claimed four wickets, Gurnoor Brar picked up three, and Anshul Kamboj delivered an impressive spell of 2/22. Kamboj was named Player of the Match for his contribution.

Following rain interruptions, India’s target was revised to 143 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. The visitors reached 143/5 in 22.4 overs to secure victory and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.

The second ODI is scheduled to take place in Wellington on November 7, with India looking to extend their advantage in the series.
