With tensions resurfacing along parts of the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to people in both states to remain calm and resolve differences through dialogue rather than confrontation.
Sarma, in a social media message, stressed the close relationship shared by Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noting that communities on both sides of the boundary have maintained social and cultural ties for generations.
The Chief Minister said considerable progress has already been made in resolving the long-running boundary dispute through discussions between the two governments. However, differences involving 52 villages are yet to be settled, with negotiations continuing between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Sarma called for restraint among residents of both states and said administrative boundaries should not undermine the longstanding relationship between the people living on either side.
His appeal comes amid a recent confrontation reported along a disputed stretch of the inter-state boundary, bringing renewed attention to the sensitive issue.
In a related development, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu spoke with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu following the incident. Khandu reportedly assured Pegu that the matter would be examined and that appropriate action would be taken against those found responsible.
The two northeastern states have been engaged in efforts to settle their boundary differences through institutional dialogue. The process has already resulted in agreements covering several disputed areas, although some issues remain unresolved.
The latest developments have once again highlighted the importance of maintaining peace along the border while the two governments work towards a lasting settlement.
Both states share extensive social, economic and cultural links, and leaders have repeatedly emphasised that disagreements over administrative boundaries should not affect relations between their people.
