Guwahati: Guwahati Police have recovered a rented vehicle that was allegedly being transported to Nagaland for an illegal sale after it was not returned to its owner following the expiry of the rental agreement. The operation resulted in the arrest of six individuals and the seizure of three vehicles.
According to Guwahati Police, the operation was carried out by a team from Hatigaon Police Station under the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD). Investigators tracked the missing vehicle using GPS technology after it was reportedly retained beyond the agreed rental period.
With assistance from Titabor Police Station and Mariani Police Station, the police team intercepted the vehicle before it could be taken out of the state. During the operation, six accused were taken into custody.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Kaustav Jyoti Saikia, Bhaskar Barua, Abhinash Saikia, and Bikash Das, all residents of Golaghat district, along with Prandip Baruah and Anurag Choudhary, both from Mariani.
Apart from recovering the rented vehicle bearing registration number AS-01-GN-2716, police also seized two additional vehicles during the operation. These include a Bolero Pickup (AS-22-AC-0643) and a Mahindra Thar (AR-01-P-3745), which are now under investigation.
Police have initiated legal proceedings against the accused, and further investigation is underway to determine whether the case is linked to a larger interstate vehicle theft or illegal vehicle trafficking network.
Authorities have urged vehicle owners and rental agencies to use GPS-enabled tracking systems and maintain proper documentation to help prevent similar incidents.
