Assam Electricity Demand Sets New Record, Crosses 3,000 MW Mark

Guwahati: Assam’s electricity consumption has reached a new high this year, with the state’s gross power demand touching 3,026.4 MW on August 11, 2026. The latest figure marks the first time peak-hour gross demand in the state has crossed the 3,000-MW threshold.

On the same day, the state’s maximum demand met stood at 2,986.4 MW, with both figures emerging as the highest recorded during the 2026-27 financial year.

The record comes amid a sustained increase in electricity requirements across Assam, reflecting the growing demand for power during peak hours.

Demand Climbs Steadily Since June

The state’s power requirement has been moving upward since June.

Gross demand stood at 2,631.13 MW on June 6, before rising to 2,684.61 MW on June 25. It crossed another level on July 2, when gross demand reached 2,733.13 MW.

By August 20, the maximum gross demand had climbed further to 2,876.23 MW, while the maximum demand met was recorded at 2,803.24 MW. The minimum demand met that day was 1,748.25 MW.

The latest figures represent a substantial increase over the previous peak recorded by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL). Its earlier record stood at 2,811.84 MW, registered on September 26, 2025.

APDCL Prepares for 3,150-MW Peak

With electricity requirements continuing to rise, APDCL is preparing for a projected peak demand of approximately 3,150 MW during the 2026-27 financial year.

To meet the state’s growing requirements, the distribution company procures electricity from 43 sources. These include five generating sources associated with the Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL).

The rising demand is also highlighting the role of Assam’s own generation capacity, particularly as the state’s power requirement continues to expand.

APGCL Plants Operating Below Combined Capacity

APGCL’s five major plants have a combined installed capacity of 378.86 MW, but their average generation is around 260 MW, according to the figures provided.

The Namrup Replacement Power Project (NRPP) has an installed capacity of 98.40 MW and produces around 83 MW. The Karbi Langpi Hydro Electric Project (KLHEP), with a 100-MW capacity, generates approximately 90 MW.

The Lakwa Replacement Power Project (LRPP) has an installed capacity of 69.76 MW and produces between 56 MW and 64 MW. Meanwhile, the Lakwa Thermal Power Station (LTPS), with a capacity of 97.2 MW, generates around 26 MW.

The smallest contributor among the five is the Myntdu-Leshka Small Hydro Power Project (MSHEP). Despite an installed capacity of 13.5 MW, it produces only around 4 MW.

Growing Demand Puts Focus on Power Supply

The crossing of the 3,000-MW mark underscores the changing scale of Assam’s electricity requirements. With APDCL expecting peak demand to approach 3,150 MW during the current financial year, maintaining adequate supply will remain a key challenge.

The performance of the state’s own generation facilities, alongside power procurement from other sources, will therefore be important in ensuring that Assam can keep pace with its rapidly increasing peak-hour electricity demand.
