Silchar: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has taken disciplinary action against 15 of its leaders and workers, removing them from the party for a period of three years over alleged violations of party discipline and failure to follow organisational instructions.
The decision was issued on September 15 by APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Barua on the direction of Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi.
The action comes at a time of internal disagreement within the party over the selection of candidates for the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation election. The dispute reportedly intensified after protests were held over the Congress nominee for Ward No. 27.
During the protests, a group of Congress workers allegedly damaged property at the Cachar District Congress Bhawan. The incident has emerged as a point of contention amid the ongoing disagreement over the candidate selection.
The allegations concerning the reported vandalism have not been independently verified.
The three-year expulsion is the latest disciplinary measure taken by the state Congress leadership as it seeks to enforce organisational directives ahead of the municipal election.
