Guwahati, September 7, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has called upon newly qualified doctors and healthcare professionals to approach their careers with compassion, discipline and a strong sense of responsibility towards society.
Sarma made the appeal while attending the 4th convocation of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS) in Guwahati on Sunday. The ceremony was attended by Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan, who addressed the graduating healthcare professionals and emphasised the importance of compassion, ethics and scientific excellence in medical service.
Congratulating the graduates, Sarma described medicine as a profession closely connected with the service of humanity. He urged those entering the healthcare sector to give priority to ethical conduct, empathy, professional discipline and dedication throughout their careers.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the transformation taking place in Assam’s healthcare and medical education sectors. He pointed to the expansion of medical colleges, improvements in health infrastructure and efforts to strengthen specialised treatment, medical research and technology-driven healthcare services.
According to Sarma, the expansion of medical education has been an important part of the state’s broader effort to improve access to healthcare. Assam has significantly increased its medical college network in recent years, while several additional institutions are under construction or at various stages of development.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the new generation of healthcare professionals graduating from SSUHS would contribute to strengthening the state’s healthcare system in the years ahead. He said their knowledge and professional skills would be an important resource in meeting the growing healthcare needs of the people.
The convocation also highlighted the expanding role of SSUHS in medical and health sciences education, research and public health. The university has been working to strengthen healthcare education in Assam, including efforts to make medical knowledge more accessible through local-language resources.
Vice-President Radhakrishnan also presented the Dr. John Berry White Award for the years 2023, 2024 and 2025 during the ceremony.
The gathering at Guwahati thus marked an important milestone for the graduating students while also reflecting Assam’s continuing focus on expanding and modernising its healthcare and medical education infrastructure.
Sarma extended his best wishes to the newly qualified professionals for successful careers and expressed hope that they would contribute to building a more accessible, modern and patient-centred healthcare system in Assam.
