Guwahati: Assam is set to embark on a major infrastructure expansion programme, with the state Cabinet approving a ₹50,000-crore package over the next five years to accelerate capital-intensive development projects across the state.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision following the Cabinet meeting, describing the investment as part of the government’s broader vision for building a more developed and infrastructure-ready Assam.
The initiative, referred to as ‘Viksit Assam: Infra Vision’, will cover several critical sectors, with the government planning to direct substantial resources towards public infrastructure and essential services.
Healthcare, Schools and Rural Infrastructure in Focus
According to the Chief Minister, strengthening primary healthcare facilities will be one of the major priorities under the programme. The plan will also support the development and improvement of schools and Anganwadi centres across the state.
Another significant component will be the construction of housing for tea garden workers, aimed at improving living conditions in tea-producing communities.
The government also intends to expand and upgrade Assam’s road and power networks, strengthening connectivity and electricity infrastructure in different parts of the state.
Women-Centric Facilities and Industrial Development
The ₹50,000-crore programme will also include investments in facilities specifically aimed at women. These will include the development of women’s markets and women’s hostels.
The state government plans to use part of the investment to strengthen industrial estates and related infrastructure, with the objective of supporting economic activity and creating a stronger environment for industrial development.
Greater Focus on Flood Protection
With Assam continuing to face recurring floods, flood-control infrastructure is another major area identified under the package.
A portion of the funds will be used to strengthen anti-flood embankments in vulnerable areas. The move is expected to support the state’s efforts to improve protection against flooding and reduce damage to communities and infrastructure.
Funding to Come From Multiple Sources
Sarma said the investment would not rely solely on the state budget. Funding is expected to be mobilised through Assam’s own resources, assistance from NABARD, as well as various schemes of the Central Government.
The Cabinet’s decision follows the Chief Minister’s Independence Day announcement outlining an ambitious capital-investment roadmap for Assam. The broader plan envisaged significant spending on infrastructure over the next five years as part of the government’s long-term development vision.
The newly approved package is expected to provide a major push to infrastructure creation across Assam, while simultaneously addressing public services, connectivity, industrial development and flood resilience.
