Ashok Singhal Reviews MMCH Construction, Preparations for Shifting GMCH Departments

Guwahati, October 26, 2026: Preparations for the proposed relocation of medical departments from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) came under review on Monday as Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal visited the Panbazar hospital to assess its infrastructure and operational readiness.

During the inspection, the minister examined the functioning of various hospital departments and reviewed the progress of ongoing construction projects intended to strengthen healthcare facilities.

A key focus of the visit was the proposed transfer of several GMCH departments to MMCH, which is being planned to facilitate repair and reconstruction work at the existing medical college hospital campus while maintaining essential healthcare services.

The relocation forms part of a wider plan to improve medical infrastructure and ensure that patients continue receiving treatment during the reconstruction period.

GMCH Department Relocation Targeted for November

The inspection comes as the Assam Health Department prepares to temporarily shift most GMCH services to MMCH.

According to an earlier announcement by Singhal, the department is targeting November 15 for completing the relocation, with the transferred hospital services expected to become operational at MMCH from November 16.

The proposed arrangement is intended to allow renovation and reconstruction activities at the GMCH campus without causing significant disruption to patient care.

During Monday’s visit, Singhal directed officials concerned to complete the ongoing construction work within the stipulated timeframe. He also emphasised the need to improve hospital management, operational efficiency and the quality of medical services provided to patients.

Director of Medical Education Dr. Manoj Kumar Choudhury, GMCH Principal Dr. Babul Kumar Bezbaruah, GMCH Superintendent Dr. Devajit Choudhury, and other senior health officials accompanied the minister during the inspection.

The planned relocation represents an important step in the state government’s efforts to upgrade major public healthcare facilities in Guwahati while maintaining access to medical treatment.

Further arrangements for shifting individual departments and managing patient services are expected to form part of the ongoing preparations ahead of the proposed transition.
