Residents in Guwahati and several parts of Assam experienced tremors on Saturday afternoon after a moderate earthquake struck Bhutan, close to the Assam region.
According to data released by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 4.9 in magnitude and occurred at 4:01 pm on September 19, 2026. The seismic event was recorded at a shallow depth of approximately 5 kilometres.
The NCS placed the earthquake at 27.163°N latitude and 91.240°E longitude, with the epicentral location identified in Bhutan. The relatively shallow depth contributed to the tremors being felt across Guwahati and other areas of Assam.
The shaking was noticeable in Guwahati and parts of western Assam, as well as neighbouring areas of Bhutan. Initial reports did not indicate any casualties or major structural damage following the earthquake.
The tremor occurred in the seismically active Himalayan region, where earthquakes of varying magnitudes are recorded from time to time. The National Centre for Seismology, the Government of India’s nodal agency for monitoring earthquake activity, maintains a nationwide network for tracking such seismic events.
Authorities and residents are continuing to keep watch for any further seismic activity. As of the initial reports, there was no indication of significant disruption caused by the earthquake in Guwahati or elsewhere in Assam.
The latest tremor has once again highlighted the seismic vulnerability of Assam and the wider Northeast, a region located near several active tectonic zones.
