Guwahati: Assam is taking another step towards technology-enabled public transport, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing the introduction of an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) for ASTC bus services.
In a post shared on Tuesday, Sarma said the new system would make Assam’s public buses “smarter” as well as safer, with technology being integrated into the everyday travel experience of passengers.
One of the key features highlighted in the announcement is real-time GPS tracking, which will allow ASTC buses to be monitored during their operations. The system is also aimed at improving the overall management and efficiency of public transport services.
The accompanying information highlights several technology-based features, including automated ticketing and electronic payments, emergency panic/SOS systems linked with control centres, and smarter scheduling aimed at reducing passenger waiting times.
Safety, particularly for women passengers, is another focus of the initiative. ASTC has previously documented the use of GPS tracking and panic buttons in around 300 buses as part of measures aimed at improving women’s safety.
The move builds on ASTC’s ongoing efforts to modernise its operations through digital transport systems. The corporation has previously identified GPS-based bus monitoring, electronic ticketing and command-and-control facilities among its transport technology initiatives.
ASTC had also issued an Expression of Interest in November 2024 specifically for the implementation of an Intelligent Transport Management System for the corporation.
The latest announcement signals a further push to bring real-time monitoring, digital payments, passenger safety systems and improved operational management into Assam’s public bus network.
