Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years at the helm of government, tracing his political journey from Gujarat to the national stage and outlining the BJP’s planned service campaign to mark the milestone.
In a detailed social media post, Sarma said October 7, 2026, will mark 25 years since Modi first assumed office as the head of a government. Modi took oath as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001, before becoming Prime Minister in 2014. The Prime Minister’s Office has also recorded October 7, 2001, as the beginning of his tenure as head of a government.
Sarma described Modi’s tenure as a journey centred on “Sewa, Sankalp and Samarpan” and highlighted initiatives and developments in Gujarat during his tenure as chief minister. He referred to reconstruction following the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, the Jyotigram power programme, irrigation and water infrastructure, the Vibrant Gujarat investment summit and the development of GIFT City.
The Assam Chief Minister also pointed to a series of national welfare and infrastructure initiatives introduced during Modi’s tenure as Prime Minister. Among the figures cited in his post were the reduction of multidimensional poverty, expansion of household tap-water connections, construction of toilets and houses, Ujjwala LPG connections, Ayushman Bharat coverage, expansion of medical colleges, highways, airports and railway infrastructure, as well as the growth of digital payments through UPI.
Sarma said these figures should be viewed in terms of their impact on people’s lives, highlighting improved access to drinking water, cleaner cooking fuel, housing, healthcare and other public services.
The post also highlighted several initiatives and developments associated with Modi’s tenure, including the abrogation of Article 370, the Ram Temple consecration in Ayodhya, redevelopment projects at Kashi Vishwanath and Mahakal Lok, and the international promotion of yoga.
A significant portion of Sarma’s message focused on the Northeast. He said the region had moved closer to the centre of India’s development agenda under Modi’s government, citing the Act East policy, peace accords involving several northeastern communities and organisations, improved railway and road investment, and the proposed semiconductor facility at Jagiroad in Assam.
Sarma particularly highlighted the ₹27,000-crore semiconductor project at Jagiroad, describing it as an opportunity for young people in Assam to pursue careers in advanced technology within the region.
He also referred to the proposed Maa Kamakhya Corridor, saying that development projects in Assam could be pursued alongside preservation of the state’s cultural and civilisational identity.
The Chief Minister further mentioned India’s space achievements, including the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, as well as international honours received by Modi.
Rather than limiting the 25-year milestone to celebrations, Sarma called upon BJP workers to participate in the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, scheduled from September 17 to October 17, 2026. The campaign is intended to encourage activities such as blood donation, helping families in need, supporting children’s education, caring for elderly people and undertaking community-oriented initiatives.
The BJP has separately announced a month-long programme to mark Modi’s 25 years in public office, beginning on his birthday on September 17 and continuing through October 17.
Sarma concluded his message by urging party workers to use the milestone as an opportunity for public service, presenting the campaign as a way to commemorate Modi’s long political journey through community-oriented activities.
