GUWAHATI: A late-night eviction operation in Boragaon has triggered resentment among roadside vendors, who alleged that their temporary stalls were dismantled and goods worth around ₹50,000 were taken away during a drive by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).
The operation was carried out at around 12:40 am, with GMC personnel targeting temporary shops and stalls occupying roadside and footpath areas. Several structures were reportedly cleared from the stretch during the drive.
According to the affected vendors, fruits, vegetables and other merchandise stored at their stalls were allegedly seized during the operation. They claimed that the items were loaded into four vehicles and removed from the area.
The vendors said the action has left them facing considerable financial hardship, particularly because much of their stock consisted of perishable goods. They expressed concern that the fruits and vegetables would lose their value after being removed from their stalls.
The manner and timing of the eviction drive also became a major point of contention among the vendors. Some alleged that the sudden operation gave them little opportunity to safeguard their belongings or stock.
The affected traders have questioned the handling of their merchandise and expressed anger over what they described as a heavy-handed late-night action.
The allegations regarding the seized goods and their estimated value are based on claims made by the affected vendors.
